February 26-27, 2012 Let’s go to the Races!!

The excitement for the weekend was the annual Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby Races.  Sunday was registration day, ensuring each boy’s car met the requirements in terms of size and weight. The cars cannot be more than 5 ounces, if that gives you any idea of how small they are.  Along with registration, a creative name has to be provided to each scout’s car, my children chose “American Fire” and “Cobra,” matching the stickers places on to the front and sides of the vehicles.  And today, well, today was the races for the scouts, family members/siblings, and the celebrities (usually dads as well as older Boy Scouts and older family members and anyone else in the community who wants to take part).  My boys have been doing this since my oldest was a first grader (4 years now), and some years they have won and some they’ve lost, but I am most proud of them for being such good sports. They have so much fun every time and never make a fuss about not always being the fastest or top car. In fact, this year my oldest was very surprised when he was called up for the Best Design Award, voted on by all the scouts and judges.  Now, if we could just get the dads to not be so competitive and just have fun too! J  Just kidding, they were all good sports, but there was definitely a lot more “ribbing” of each other on the adult’s part than by the children to each other.  Oh, to be a kid again, where spending time with friends and racing cars is the priority of the weekend, and worries about responsibilities and money have not yet come into play.
