Washington Summer Defiance
This summer
in WA has been a hot and dry one. We are currently in a drought with wildfires
burnings all over the state. Before
moving to the NW, I was told by so many people about how much it rains here,
and in particular Seattle (from which we only live about an hour’s drive). I always said that would be alright with me
because I had lived in the tropical environment of Kwajalein so long and would
welcome the change. However, when I
began visiting Oregon with my then boyfriend, it was always beautiful and
sunny, and I hardly ever saw any rain, even when we visiting at times other
than summer. So, I started to call BS on
that one. I was told “no, really…when
you live here year round and have several months of rain and gray clouds, it
really gets depressing.” Okay, so I’ve
been here a year and a ½ now, and sure, there have been gray days and several
days in a row of gray and rain, but it’s hardly the extreme people warned me
about. And then we have the summer of
2015, where we are practically begging for rain to quench the fires and soak
our dormant, dry grass. I call it an act
of Washington Summer Defiance. We will
change our reputation from a place that sells t-shirts in Pike Place market
touting our permenant “rainy day festival” to a place that is simply AWESOME to
visit and live. How could it not be with
places such as the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge, Crystal Mountain, the Skookumchuck Unit, Mt.
Rainier, the Puyallup State Fair, Tolmie State Park, the Deschutes River, the
San Juan Islands, Seattle, and even my tiny little town of Tumwater, the home of
the original Olympic Brewery! I mean,
really, what did you think this post was going to be about? J
