September 22: Writing Prompt #265-Practice Makes Perfect

Tell us about a talent you’d love to have...but don’t.

Well, this could be a long list. I don’t think I could name just one since 3 things come to mind right away! I’d love to be more naturally athletic, intuitively talented at cooking and meal presentation, and I’d really, really love to be good at illustrating my own children’s books.  The athletic thing…it is what it is. I am not terrible. I have some grace and talent for things like yoga and dance, but I’m not naturally aggressive in team sports nor do I have a driving determination to be the fastest and best in individual sports such as running races, etc…I’d love to have more of that drive and desire to take my exercising to the next level. I used to cook, but it was pretty much all self-taught, and it was very simple and southern, i.e. casseroles, 4 layer desserts, chess pies, crock pot meals, and the like. I’ve learned so much more from watching my husband cook and getting advice from him, but I don’t naturally have the instincts he does for what would taste good together, how to plate something, or even the chef’s imagination to put together a meal each night for dinner from what we have in the house already. All that said, if I could give up having an athletic drive or a chef’s instinct’s for the talent of book illustration, I would do so in a heartbeat.  Oh to be able to find an illustration concept like Eric Carle’s unique collage techniques to put my words into pictures.  Thankfully, I have 2 very sweet children and a wonderful artist friend who have so graciously given of their time and talents to illustrate my books thus far.  How about you? What talent are you missing?
