June 16: Writing Prompt #167-Bookworm

Tell us about the last book you read (Why did you choose it? Would you recommend it?). To go further, write a post based on its subject matter.
I have started 3 to 4 books in the last few months and not finished any of them.  I need a vacation just to have time to read!! Hey, that’s a good idea….a reading vacation.  I’ll explore that later.
At any rate, the one book out of all of them that I am currently attempting to complete is called “Orphan Train.” It is historical fiction, one of my favorite genres, based on the real orphan trains that existed from 1853-1929. I choose the book because it was recommended when I purchased “The Book Thief,” also a historical fiction novel about a little German girl and her experience with Nazis and hiding a Jew during WWII.  According to Wikipedia, “The Orphan Train Movement was a supervised welfare program that transported orphaned and homeless children from crowded Eastern cities of the United States to foster homes located largely in rural areas of the Midwest.” The program relocated about 250,000 orphaned, abandoned, and homeless children. The fictionalized book follows the journey of a little girl who is an orphan on the train. It details her past as a child and also her present life as an old lady getting to know a foster child doing community service work at her home.  So far, I am really enjoying it, and yes, I would recommend it, especially if you enjoy historical fiction. Reading some of the reviews on Amazon, one reader said that she has learned so much about the history of America from books like this one.  I would have to agree with her. I have become so much more attuned to and educated about the people, struggles, and history of my country through novels exploring characters’ experiences based on real events that have occurred.

That said, some of what takes my time away from getting my reading done is this blog, so I am going to say good night and get back to my book before I get too sleepy to do so. J
