If you could get all the nutrition you
needed in a day with a pill — no worrying about what to eat, no food
preparation — would you do it?
No. I have
an extremely fit, healthy friend who once told me, “I don’t eat for taste.” He
got all his nutrition through things like protein shakes and other foods not
designed to be yummy, buy instead designed like the “pill” in the prompt, to
provide you everything you needed nutrition wise. Although occasionally, I wish I could be more
like that, and I have the upmost admiration for those who are that dedicated
and can achieve such levels in their fitness, MOST of the time, I can’t imagine
eating only for nutrients and not for taste.
I enjoy gourmet food too much. I get excited to try new dishes my
husband makes or to find new favorite restaurants with budding chefs
experimenting with creative food combinations.
I even enjoy watching cooking shows and love it when the children I work
with decide to try and learn to like new foods they’ve never had before. Some of my favorite activities to do with the
children I used to teach in my school age program involved cooking. We had such
a good time, which is one of the many reasons that I couldn’t do a nutrition
pill once a day with no other foods.
It’s fun to cook with friends and enjoy food together. I feel I would be missing out on a huge part
of life if food was not in it. It’s all
about balance and variety and keeping yourself in check, and doesn’t that apply
to every part of our lives anyway…not just food? I know food can be a horrible
addiction for people and the source of a lot of pain, but I don’t think that
means we should eliminate it totally from our lives. If that’s how we decided
to look at life (take away anything and everything that caused pain or could
possibly be addictive), there wouldn’t be much left in it to enjoy, would
there?
