November 10: Writing Prompt #314-The Perfect Game

You’re set to play poker (or Scrabble or something else . . .) with a group of four. Write a story set during this game. Or, describe the ideal match: the players, the relationships — and the hidden rivalries.

I am not much of a video game girl. I still like old-fashioned board and card games.  My boys, however, prefer video games to board games, so I comprise sometimes and purchase board games for our PS4.  The latest one we like to play together as a family is Monopoly (on the PS4).  It’s interesting how our personalities really come through when playing a game like this.  My youngest is the most competitive and ruthless.  My oldest wants to beat his brother, but tends to be indecisive, then makes last minute “saving himself” choices without using much strategy.  My husband and I both play fairly conservatively, but attempting to use strategy and rational to win the game.  Usually, my ruthless baby wins.  He buys up all he can quickly and puts houses on it to get his money back.  He will not trade to give someone else all the properties in a group, and he stands his ground on that, no matter how good your offer is.  My oldest tries to catch up until he bankrupts himself, but all with a smile on his face and good humor accompanying his losses.  My husband eventually gets bored and frustrated and bankrupts himself purposely before our youngest does it.  He will not give him that satisfaction.  I usually hang in there to the end, but not without my own frustration at getting out played by my 12 year old! :-p
