November 8: Writing Prompt #312-Connect the Dots

Scour the news for an entirely uninteresting story. Consider how it connects to your life. Write about that.
From The Olympian: Photo article-Historic 170 year-old Tumwater tree weathers weekend storm and Father Time. See photos and information by following this link. http://www.theolympian.com/news/local/article33226023.html

I find this article interesting, but I can see how others might find it a little less than spectacular, and you certainly wouldn’t find it in the “breaking news” front page of the paper. I choose it over several other local photo news items online (that are probably similarly uninteresting to the wider world of media seekers) because it speaks to me.  The man in the photos/article has been taking care of these unique and historic trees for several years now because he sees an importance in preserving and saving them.  He knows why this particular type of tree is so special whereas most of us passing by it on a walk or when driving down the road would never realize that it was any different from the many other trees that can be found in the Pacific Northwest everywhere you turn.  I was particularly awed and inspired by the trees upon moving here, especially coming from a place where it was rare to see anything other than coastal ground cover growth and coconut trees.  Seeing these photos and one man’s dedication to these trees reminds me that sometimes it’s more important to find purpose and opportunities for service to the world in small, seemingly insignificant things because it’s those things that often speak to others so deeply and provide us with so many wonderful experiences to be thankful for and enjoy in this crazy, often upside down world.
